The Opportunity
KCRep is looking to hire a Microphone Technician (A2) for our upcoming production of A Christmas Carol.
This is an entry level job for someone who is interested in working in a sound department at a professional theatre. In this job, you will be trained to work with actors, stage managers, and a sound crew to prep, maintain, monitor, and strike microphones in a professional theatre setting.
What You’ll Do
Maintain Microphones
Your main job will be to prepare microphones by placing batteries in microphones and working with the Head Audio Engineer to test all the mics before every show. You will also strike the mics by ensuring the batteries are placed in the chargers every night and properly wrap the microphone elements to ensure they won’t get damaged. It will also be your job to make sure any tears, breaks, or other issues are communicated to the Head Audio Engineer.
Monitor Microphones
During the run of a show, you will sit backstage at a microphone listening station and monitor the microphones while the actors are onstage. This includes listening to the mics with headphones, and monitoring for interference using Wireless Workbench. If issues come up, then you will work with the actor and Head Audio Engineer to resolve the issues while the actors are offstage.
Work with Actors and Stage Crew Backstage
Before every show, you will work with actors to make sure they have everything they need to put their mics on (mic tape, hair clips, etc). You will also check the mic placement on each actor, and assist them with keeping their mic in a consistent spot to ensure consistent sound quality onstage. And if a mic issue occurs during a show, you will work with the actor, stage crew, and/or youth cast coordinators to fix the mic issue when the actor is offstage.
Assist with Other Backstage Sound Needs
You will also assist backstage crew with any other sound need that occurs during the show. This includes assisting with the wireless com and troubleshooting the band speakers as needed.
Qualifications:
- Basic knowledge of sound technology and terminology
- Knowledge of Shure Wireless Microphones preferred
- Experience work in technical theatre, particularly in sound or a backstage crew
- Knowledge of ClearCom Wireless Com preferred
- Basic knowledge of video systems would be a plus
- Ability to troubleshoot on the fly in a calm and professional manner
Note: This job requires working with a youth cast, so you must pass a background check in order to get this job.
